Just ten thousand reflections.

I walked into fall this morning. It'd rained last night and the streets were still a little wet and the air was still a little cool. With the smell of wet leaves in the gutter and faint light from the turning season, it all settled just on top of my skin. The sort of autumn morning I'd grown up with. It was gone the moment I looked up at the bright sky with its few puffy clouds, which made for a heavy dose of cognitive dissonance before I even got onto the subway. And then I'd look around me, not above me, and I could remember the sidewalks on the bike rides to school when I was a kid. It didn't last, dissipating by the time I got to work, but I knew this was the beginning of the end of summer.

After work, I went to the greenmarket, and I knew it was really time. Hard squashes have come in. There's no pumpkins as of yet, but they're looming. Just over the horizon. And even though I look forward to the delicately balanced chill to come back and settle for a moment, it's always hard when I know I've arrived at the end of something.

I also found out I'm leaving for a family vacation a day before I thought I was. So that's something cleared up well ahead of time, at least. It's one less day to worry about packing, and more important to me, one less day for writing. I don't think I'll be able to break 60,000 words on the current WIP, which means it's possible 2017 may be the first year of all the years I've been in fandom where I haven't finished something - at least, something beyond little birthday challenge drabbles. When I get back from the vacation, I'm going back to an original project that I can hopefully look at with enough detachment to be harsh but fair, and then it's beginning another one and trying to get momentum going on that first...and in all that, time for playing around with Buffy the Vampire Slayer might well drop in importance. Even though I know it won't take much more than another dedicated fortnight or so to get the first rough draft completed, and then maybe another month to go through for a first-pass edit, and a bounty of other beautiful excuses I can give to myself. Especially with classes beginning soon. I'll want something to play with.

Which I know I'll just have to make the time for.

Does anyone know offhand if random people can donate DW points (to buy paid time for comment-searches) to a community? I know you can do it for an account but can't figure out from the FAQ if this works for comms as well.

East Central University in Oklahoma may ultimately have to remove Christian symbols from their non-denominational chapel, but that potential outcome is a long ways off.

calling all Latinists

I seem to remember, back in high school, translating a poem by Horace where the first word (?) of the poem was a verb . . . but the subject of that verb was buried down in the second stanza. I don’t recall anything about its subject matter; it only stuck with me because it was the most egregious example I had personally encountered of how Latin can make an utter jigsaw of its word order.

But that poem doesn’t appear to be in our little booklet of Catullus and Horace, which means it was one of the ones the teacher gave us in a handout. And although I thought I still had those handouts, I can’t find them. So I turn to you, o Latinists of the internet: does this ring a bell? Can anybody point me at the poem in question?

Leaving in an hour for Albuquerque. Back Tuesday. In between, a con!

I hope this is still cross-posting to LiveJournal. Anyone from LJ reading this, for the past 48 hours, LJ has not let me comment on anyone's journal. I will try again on my laptop on route, but might not be able to catch up.

Will talk more about a really good ballet I watched recently on YouTube.

Also, reading.

1. I'm baking a blueberry buckle for dessert tonight. (That's what I've always called it, because I think that was on the recipe when I learned it, though I'm not sure it's actually a buckle. A blueberry thing with a biscuit-like topping.)

2. It is a stunningly beautiful day -- blue sky and green everything and gentle breeze and the omnipresent sound of late-summer insects singing away.

3. I am feeling the beginnings of overwhelm, but I am reminding myself that there is no way around feeling overwhelmed at this time of year in my line of work, and therefore I am trying to just let it go instead of fantasizing that if I were somehow more organized I wouldn't be where I am.

4. I'm working on an editing project that I'm totally excited about. It is not what I should be spending my time on right now (see item 3), but it is still making me happy.

5. Tonight I think [personal profile] kouredios and I will return to Gilmore Girls! Either that, or we'll return to Doctor Who, because I still haven't finished the current season. Either way, an evening of fannish tv awaits.

I'm getting better at keeping the width consistent (ish. Very ish.), although not so much at keeping the spin consistent.

I am finding that I would really like to have a sea/ocean icon. I like blues/teals and I am also fond of seahorses and sand dollars. Would anyone be willing to make me an icon from some public domain image in exchange for a flash fiction or simple cartoon/sketch or something?

ETA: While I'm at it, what's the difference besides animation style between Star Wars: Clone Wars (older, 2D animation) and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (newer, 3D animation)? I am strongly biased aesthetically toward 2D animation but will watch the latter if the story/characters are good...
